現在私は、古畑大気と共に愛知県瀬戸市末広町で現代美術の企画型ギャラリーとカフェが一体となった「Art Space & Cafe Barrack」というスペースを運営している。自身も絵画を制作し、週の前半を制作に、後半をスペースの運営にあてて瀬戸で暮らしている。
瀬戸市という街は古くから窯業で栄え、「セトモノ」「やきもの」の街という印象でひろく知られている。近年では、大規模な窯業関連工場が廃業してしまうという現実もある中、使われなくなった倉庫に多くの作家が入り込み、日々の制作の場にしているという事実がある。かつて職人が大勢いた工房には、現在多くの陶芸家達と共に、絵画、彫刻、デザイン、写真といった様々なジャンルの作家が入り込んでいる。それは、やきものの街といわれる瀬戸の中において、新たに「美術」が街と深く関わり、新しい瀬戸市を形作っていっているようである。
先にも述べた通り、私自身や古畑大気も愛知県立芸術大学を卒業後、活動拠点を瀬戸に移し、制作を続ける一人であり、設楽陸が代表を務める共同アトリエ「タネリスタジオビルヂング」の1階を借りて自分達で改装したカフェギャラリーを運営している。美術と人、街がつながる実験的スペースとして2017年のオープンより、これまで多くの国内外のアーティストの展覧会を行ってきた。また、国内における（自分達も含めた）若手作家の発表の機会の少なさという問題と向き合い、作家自身が発表の場を生み出し、現代美術をより身近に感じてもらい、 鑑賞出来る場になるよう取り組んできた。そして次第に、Art Space & Cafe Barrack が瀬戸市内外の作家、ツクリテのHUB的な役割を持った場になることを意識するようになり、自分達と同じように瀬戸で制作をする作家の多様性や豊かさ、その数の多さに気付かされるのだった。
過去には北川民次のアトリエがあったことをはじめ、ものづくりの土壌が日常にある瀬戸において、現在、若手からベテランまで瀬戸で生活・制作を行なっている作家を集めると、他ではあまり考えられない希有な土地の特色として深く作家と美術と街が関わっていると感じる。このことは、瀬戸にスペースを構えそこで出会った沢山の作家達との関わりの中で、驚きと静かな感動と共に気がついた事実である。この事実を新たな街の魅力の一つとして広く紹介し、瀬戸に根付くものづくりの歴史を体感しながら、素晴らしい作品が日々生まれるこの地の大勢のアーティストと共にリアリティを持って展覧会を行いたい、という私にとって原始的な欲求が生まれたのである。
まだまだ知られていない瀬戸市と美術という繋がりの力を、“SETOMADE＝せともの”の現代美術の展覧会という形でお見せできればと思う。この展覧会を通して、「創造の街としての瀬戸」がより多くの人に新たな魅力として伝わり、今後の瀬戸を形づくる重要な一部となれば幸いである。

I am currently running a space “Art Space & Cafe Barrack” in Suehiro-cho, Seto city, Aichi, with Taiki Furuhata. This space combines a contemporary art gallery with a cafe. I also engage in painting and split my time between creating artwork during the first half of the week and managing the space during the latter half, all while living in Seto.
Seto city has been historically renowned for its ceramics industry and is widely known as the city of “Setomono” or pottery. Despite the recent closure of large-scale ceramic-related factories, many artists have repurposed disused warehouses into daily production spaces. These spaces, once filled with artisans, now host artists from various genres such as painting, sculpting, design, and photography, alongside numerous ceramic artists. This transformation reflects a deeper integration of “art” into the city of Seto, previously known for pottery, shaping a new identity for Seto city.
As mentioned earlier, both Taiki Furuhata and I graduated from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and relocated to Seto to continue to create our artworks. We rent the ground floor of the shared atelier “Taneri Studio Building” managed by Riku Shitara, and have renovated it into a cafe gallery. Since its opening in 2017, we have hosted many exhibitions featuring artists from both domestic and international backgrounds. We have also addressed the issue of limited opportunities for young artists, including ourselves, to exhibit their work domestically. To tackle this, we have worked towards creating platforms for artists to showcase their contemporary art, making it more accessible for viewers. Over time, we have become increasingly aware of Art Space & Cafe Barrack’s role as a hub for artists within and outside Seto, recognizing the diversity, richness, and abundance of artists creating artwork in Seto.
In the past, there was Tamiji Kitagawa’s atelier, highlighting Seto as a place where the basis of craftsmanship is part of daily life. When I gather artists who live and work in Seto, from young talents to veterans, I feel that it is a unique place deeply intertwined with artists, art, and the city. This realization dawned upon me amidst interactions with many artists encountered in Seto, evoking surprise and a quiet sense of awe. I want to widely introduce this fact as one of the new attractiveness of the city. And, with a primal desire, I want to hold exhibitions alongside the many talented artists in this place where remarkable artworks are born daily, experiencing firsthand the history of craftsmanship rooted in Seto.
I hope to show the power of the connection between Seto city and art, which is yet to be fully recognized, through contemporary art exhibitions under the theme of “SETOMADE = Setomono.” Through this exhibition, I aim to convey the concept of “Seto as a city of creation” to a wider audience, hoping it becomes an integral part in shaping the future of Seto.
