憶測とは、証拠に基づかない推測のことをいう。私たちは、常に憶測で判断を―多くは無意識のうちに―することで、取り巻く複雑な状況を切り抜けている。確証を得る憶測もあれば放棄される憶測もあるが、それは単に新たな憶測に取って代わられるに過ぎない。憶測は人を分かつ差異であり、文化の違いを明らかにもする。
この世界について、私たちはどのような憶測を抱いているのだろう。憶測することで、世界の見え方はどう変わるのだろうか。目の前のイメージに、何を憶測をするのだろう。そこに何が見えていて、何を見させられているのか。何が優位で、何が明白で、何が変化し、一体何に信頼を寄せているのか？
Assumptions are statements that are not supported by evidence. We constantly make assumptions – often without noticing – as a means to navigate our complex surroundings. Assumptions can be verified or discarded, only to be replaced by new assumptions. Assumptions differ from one individual to the next individual, from one culture to the next.
What do we assume about the world and how is our understanding shaped by that? What do we assume when looking at images? What do we see and what are we made to see? What is significant, what is evident, what changes – and in what do we trust?
